Rusko’s Love For Dubstep Began With…Ska?

Before Rusko was making filthy beats to blast out our eardrums, he was determined to make music that sounded similar to ska/punk bands such as Mad Caddies. Growing up in Leeds, England, Christopher Mercer was a part of an eight-piece band where he wrote out all the saxophone, trumpet, and trombone parts. As he learned more and more about ska, punk, and reggaes roots, Rusko delved more deeply into dub music, the reggae substyle that focuses mainly on instrumental mixes.

He further explains, “really, my segue into electronic music was making dub reggae at home on the computer, which was an extension of what I was already doing in a live setting, but then I realized I could literally have it exactly the way I wanted it because I’m a control freak.”

However he got his start, it certainly worked: Rusko is now nothing less than a superstar in the EDM community, being compared to the likes of Skrillex and Nero. Keep on doing your thing, Rusko!

Cazzette Partnering With Spotify For Debut Album Release

Well, no one can say that they’re not embracing the digital age! In a new and bold move, Swedish dub-duo Cazzette is partnering with online music service Spotify to promote their debut album. While some may say that this is one of the more clever moves of artists nowadays, quite a few people are worried about what pairing promotion with the web may do for record company sales.

Steve Savoca, global head of content for Spotify, wants people to know that his music service is not looking to completely erase record labels. He explains, “we want to be a powerful partner to artists so that they can leverage our platform to build strong one-to-one relationships with their fans.” Cazzette, who until now, has made most of their income on live shows, said, “Album sales are secondary. Of course, the promotion will reflect album sales, but that’s not the main reason we’re doing this. Accessibility and exposure is more important for us, as opposed to selling as many CDs as possible.”

Whatever the motive may be, we have a feeling that Cazzette is a group to keep your eyes – and ears – on. Be sure to check out their debut album, “Eject,” being released exclusively on Spotify today!

Tiesto Teams Up With (RED) For World AIDS Day Global EDM Event

Tiesto has become the latest celebrity face of this years (RED) campaign event. In a global event set to be held on World AIDS Day, December 1st, the superstar will be helping recruit other EDM artists to raise awareness about the transmission of HIV from mothers to their babies, with the ultimate goal being to completely eliminate the passing of the deadly disease by 2015.

(RED) CEO Deborah Dugan expressed her excitement at having the EDM heavyweight join the campaign by saying, “Having Tiesto engage his strong following to help (RED) deliver and AIDS-free generation is a dream come true to us. This is just the kind of firepower we need to bring the world’s attention to the fact that we can end AIDS; a notion that was considered virtually impossible a decade ago.”

Three Dead Following Stampede at Steve Aoki Show

Steve Aoki’s Halloween concert in Madrid this past Wednesday ended in tragedy when three young women were killed in an “inhuman” stampede. The concert, which was held at Thriller Music Park, had been authorized to admit 10,600 people, but concert-goers were shocked to find that an estimated 20,000 people had been crammed into the arena at the night’s peak. While an investigation is still being conducted, it is said that a flare was set off in the crowd, causing mass panic and a human bottleneck to form, eventually killing three and injuring an additional two by “trauma by crushing, possibly having suffered a fall and being trampled.” Our hearts go out to all of the victims and their families during this difficult time.

Armin van Buuren Reclaims #1 DJ Crown

Trance superstar Armin van Buuren has reclaimed the title of world’s best DJ, according to DJmag.com by snatching the crown from fellow heavyweight David Guetta, who has “kept the thrown warm” for the last year. This is Armin’s fifth win, making him the artist who has held the thrown the most times.

The trance master, seemingly in shock, expressed, “this feels surreal,” and that “being #1 again feels like being in a warm bath, there’s so much love out there it’s great. Almost suffocating! I’m so thankful for it.”

We can’t think of anyone else who deserves this more than one of the most gracious and talented men out there; congratulations Armin!

Steve Aoki Hospitalized For Neck Injury After Stage Dive Fail

Well…that’s awkward. Steve Aoki, who is known in many circles for his outrageous stage antics, such as “crowd rafting,” finally tempted fate one time too many during a concert in San Juan, Puerto Rico this past weekend. The DJ, who was ironically wearing a shirt that read, “watch your neck,” attempted a stage dive off a trampoline, and landed at a bad angle. He was taken to Ashford Presbyterian Community Hospital in San Juan, and released the next day free of any major injuries. Always the joker, Aoki documented the entire incident on his tumblr page, and proved to everyone that indeed, laughter is sometimes the best medicine.

Skrillex & Ellie Goulding Split

Bad news, ravers: EDM power couple Skrillex and Ellie Goulding have split after a year of dating. Everyone is dying to know the reason for the half-shaved lovers’ split: was it infidelity? Boredom? A secret love of country music? Fortunately, it was nothing too dramatic, with multiple sources claiming that, like countless other superstar relationships today, distance took a toll on the couple. It is reported that both Skrillex and Goulding harbor no hard feelings towards one another, and “hope to remain good friends.” Best of luck to both of the hurting musicians, keep your chins up, you two!

Ultra Music Festival To Expand To Two Weekends

Last year’s wildly successful Ultra Music Festival has officially proven to be simply too much for one weekend. Just in time for the Ultra’s 15-year anniversary, the massive Miami music festival will stretch its party from the weekend of March 15-17, and will pick back up after a four-day break on March 22-24. Featured artists have not yet been announced, but with last year’s headliners being superstars such as David Guetta, Kaskade, Armin van Buuren, and Avicii, who surprised everyone with featuring Madonna in his set, we can only imagine how amazing the 2013 lineup is going to be!
