White Noise Reviews Salt Ashes

Music Blog, White Noise reviews the self-titled debut album by electronic/pop artist Salt Ashes. White Noise describes the emerging singer-songwriter by saying “If LIGHTS and Daft Punk had a musical lovechild, it would be Salt Ashes.” The blog reviews each song on the album, complimenting its dream-like state as it opens up with the first track “Save It” which fuses electronic sound effects with Salt Ashes feminine vocals. “Somebody” uses the same echoed affect, reminiscent of 80’s style dance/pop with a modern edge. Salt Ashes’ voice is almost haunting in this track. Many of her songs will make listeners feel like they are amidst a dream they cannot awake from, and this track is no different.

“Wilderness” is appropriately named for its untamed sound. Echoes and sound effects make the track even more free falling. This song, again, has a 1980’s quality, not unlike some other tracks on the album. For example, “Sober” is an up-tempo track that gives the ironic illusion of intoxication through sound effects. This track pulls off being relaxed and fast paced at the same time. “Raided” is another highly rhythmic track that needs no remixing for the club scene. It has a mellow vibe with soft vocals while keeping the fast pace that Salt Ashes has created thus far on the album.

“Chemical Rush” begins on the softer side, contradicting the title of the track. When the chorus kicks in, the music intensifies along with the lyrics. “There’s nothing more to your touch/lay down you’ve taken enough/there’s nothing more to your touch/trying to find my chemical rush,” exudes a desperation to find something. Listeners will get lost in many of Salt Ashes’ songs, however this one has more of an internalized quality.

Fusing qualities of older electronic music with the technology of new electronic sound, Salt Ashes put together an album of similarly styled songs with a burst of energy not commonly found among alternative music. Whether relaxing at home or going out for a night of clubbing, Salt Ashes created a variety of music that will fit a variety of moods.
