Kingsland Road - We Are The Young

Kingsland Road’s Interview With UMusicians

Emerging UK pop sensation Kingsland Road recently spoke with UMusicians about their debut album, We Are The Young, which was released in North America on May 4th. The boy band came to fame after being on The X-Factor UK. Check out some the interview with UMusicians below, but make sure you head over to UMusicians.com to read the full interview.

JH: How did you all meet and form the group?
Connor:
Two of us met at college. We thought ‘for some strange reason’ to start a boy band! We found the other two lads and the rest is history.

JH: You’ve described your sound as “1970s urban of funk and disco with just a drop of reggae andindie pop and new wave “ Do you guys have older favorite artists from back in the day that played a role in inspiring your sound? (i.e 70s or New Romantic era)
Connor:
I think each song on the album is so different purely because we all have different tastes in music. Personally, I like all genres of music. I take a huge liking to the old school such as The Jam, Adam Ant, The Who, Stiff Little Fingers, as well as newer music like All American Rejects, Fall Out Boy, Rage Against the Machine, My Chemical Romance. I also like R&B and hip hop! Drake’s Take Care album is one of my all-time favourite albums! Don’t forget Ed Sheeran! He is my idol! Even have a tattoo of his + album on my arm!

JH: Songs on your debut album “We Are The Young”, such as the title track, seem to be a bit deeper while other ones are just good, fun jams. Is there a specific message behind the record?
Josh:
I think when we wrote “We are the Young,” we were a bit fed up. We believe that in life you should be able to make your own mistakes, and not have people teach and preach about the correct way to do things. People always doubt our generation and that bothers us. “We are the Young” is us telling our generation to stick together. It’s about telling our parents and other people in authority “let me make my own mistakes.”
JH: Music “elitists” often try to put down boy bands just because their fan bases are predominantly female. What’s your opinion on that sort of mindset?
Matt:
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. We started to make music because we love and appreciate it, like people used to. I don’t think you can concentrate on the music if you pay attention to the people who doubt you.  When we perform live, we can change people’s opinions about us and the boy band stereo type, and that is the best feeling. We just love to have fun and write songs about what’s going on in our lives and how we feel.
