Brothers from Strasbourg – France, HARRY VEYNAND & XAVIER VEYNAND have long been part of an indeed temporal, thus progressive approach to shaping the spirit of discovery and critical thinking: whether it was during their university education, or through their learning of musical instruments, until their first steps creating music, leading to the assertion of their singularity as artists and music producers duo “TUNE IN CREW”
With awareness of the reality that any artist is beneficiary and partially tributary of already existing creations, they dare the boldness, they dare to take the risk in exploring new forms. Each track is experienced as a search to bring out a new relevance, attentive not to fall into trivializing. It is driven by a will to experiment, with humility and joy, between caution, confidence, and requirement. Given what they have lived, listened to, read, learned and thought -all the more in a time of acute conformism, while the world is truly, more than ever opened up- the 2 brothers find meaning in a music rich of its high diversity.
Indeed, from sunny and warm Caribbean, Oriental and Latin influences, to the edge of modern electronic synths, and with a subtle touch of soulful American music, TUNE IN CREW’s sound is a story of surprising balance, of breath, making for a lively and game-changing kind of Pop music. Having in mind and at heart that “Music has, quite particularly, the prestige of both the unity and the otherness” (M. Edwards), Harry and Xavier embraced that music contributes to the future, as a sketch, binding the individual and collective level, and that is also why music has an inherent political nature.
For this reason, they didn’t hesitate to build tracks around political speeches in their country, in favor of a greater, revalued democratic participation. This outlines the aspiration to add to the already existing free spaces, and be one of these cases which incite to the creative courage: this very confidence towards the unknown.
TUNE IN CREW puts front-and-center… “La joie de vivre”!
Step inside their universe, and get to know ,I.O.U., acronym for Inside Our Universe, comprised of Izee and Buck, two young artists from South Brunswick, NJ who have created a following with their clean mainstream pop/hip-hop sound, comparable to acts such as Black Eyed Peas, and Outkast.
The boys rose to local stardom under the stage name Deuce 1’s during their freshman year of college when they released ‘Rutgers State of Mind’ their take on Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ ‘Empire State of Mind.’ The song became a Rutgers anthem, and the following year Buck and Izee linked up to record ‘Black and Scarlet,’ their take on Wiz Khalifa’s ‘Black and Yellow’ which landed them the title of ‘Rutgers’ Official Rap Group,’ and left many fans wondering, what can we expect from these guys next?
A few months later, the fellows holed themselves up in their studio, changed their name to I.O.U., a name they felt was more meaningful, and set out to break their mind barriers, figuratively, by producing and recording their self-released mixtape ‘Breaking Our Mind Barriers’ or ‘B.O.M.Bs.’ released summer of 2011, which made its round in the blogosphere.
Three mixtape releases later, garnering attention from their Rutgers University colleagues and fellow college students across the country and beyond, opening for countless acts such as Big Sean, Far East Movement, Jake Miller and more, the boys linked up with Radikal Records to release their debut album “The Soul & The Intellect.”
The title of the album reflects the characters of both Buck and Izee, laidback Buck being the soul of the duo, and methodical Izee, producer behind the entire project, the intellect. Also featured as a vocalist on two tracks off the album is Evangelia, a Rutgers University student. When she’s not studying t be a teacher, you can catch her performing at the local coffee shops armed with her guitar and powerful voice.

“Racecar Driver” by Tune In Crew was previewed to me a few months back. A naïve love story between a teenage bad-boy daredevil, and an Upper East Side rich girl, I couldn’t wait to share this mainstream sounding record when it had been made public. Also featuring vocals from Silver Medallion, his soulful crooning flawlessly complement the French duo’s electro-pop production. With its nostalgic, upbeat vibe and sense of adventure from the lyrics “Racecar Driver” by Tune In Crew featuring Silver Medallion has the potential to be a HIT record. Take a listen to the song and purchase it out now on iTunes via Radikal Records. Enjoy!
If you haven’t yet, head over to Attitude Magazine to read up on Salt Ashes’ interview on the inspiration behind “Somebody,” her upcoming projects, being compared to Kylie Minogue, and the origins of her name (it comes from a boat!) Check out an excerpt below of the interview, and head here to read it in its entirety! Oh and if you haven’t already purchased Salt Ashes’ latest single “Somebody” make sure you get it on iTunes today!
Somebody was, in fact, inspired by a break-up.
“The song is basically about that shit period you have to go through just after a break-up. It’s all of those emotions that you feel when you’re bumping into your ex at a club and seeing them with another person. You can hear in the song that he walks into the club with another girl and it fucking kills you, doesn’t it?”
The song’s video, is, erm, a bit NSFW…
“The steamy element wasn’t really in my vocabulary when I was thinking about the video. What I wanted was passion, fire and aggressiveness because fundamentally that’s what the song is about. It’s about that raw passion between people, then breaking up and still feeling that passion but feeling aggressive towards them. I wanted all that pushing and pulling.”
Despite being referred to as the “S&M Kylie”, Salt Ashes doesn’t really hear much of La Minogue in her music. However, she really doesn’t mind the comparison.
“I think with any any artist, the natural thing to want to do is relate it to something that you’ve heard – so you know where to place it. I think that Somebody is definitely very Kylie. I’m not going to deny it. It’s kind of a dark Kylie. I don’t mind, really. I think I’m going to be continuously compared to people. The aim is to be as individual as possible, which can be difficult as the industry is so saturated with new musicians. But as long as I’m trying then I’m happy.”
