Maddox Jones – It Ain’t Perfect, But It’s Home

When a radio host on BBC Northampton put out the call for songwriters to pen a love song to their hometown, Maddox Jones answered with ‘It Ain’t Perfect, But It’s Home’. Sharing his life experiences through music- from late nights as a young adult to watching the landscape of his beloved town change- Maddox posted his tribute to Northampton on TikTok and instantly garnered the attention of thousands in his community. It has since become available on streaming via Radikal Records, and played at a local team’s soccer match.

About a month ago, Justin Dealey from BBC Northampton and Three Counties asked me to write a love song to Northampton. So I did, and I ended up really liking it. It made me think about what I love about this town. I was born in Northampton, left for university, and spent years living in Manchester, Cyprus, London and High Wycombe, always convinced I was heading somewhere new. But somehow, this place keeps calling me back.

Like most of us, I couldn’t wait to leave my hometown when I was younger. Now I realise what makes Northampton special isn’t the buildings or the streets. It’s the people. The friendships, the creativity, the sense of community, and the unbelievably talented souls who make this town what it is. This song is my love letter to all of that.
