Girls, parties, expensive mansions, and pirates all make an appearance in the very not safe for work clip for Calvin Harris’ “Thinking About You.” The video also features none other than Ayah Marar, who does vocals on the track and rides in a fancy boat with her friends. Where was she heading? Does she make it to the outlandish mansion party? No spoilers, but check out the video to find out!
Entertainment website, Skiddle recently posted a interview with Ayah Marar. In the interview, Ayah speaks on being dubbed “Queen Of Bass,” how females djs/producers present themselves , her festival shows, future plans, and much more. You can read the full interview below or find it here.
After working with Calvin Harris, Toddla T, Cheryl Cole and DJ Fresh, the London based, multi talented Ayah Marar has established herself as one of the leading lights of bassmusic. With a busy touring schedule and a slew of collaborations and hotly anticipated solo productions in the pipeline, we catch up with the Jordan born workaholic to talk surfing, songwriting, and sexuality…
You’re playing the Boardmasters festival in a couple of weeks. How excited are you to be involved in it?
We love being on the road (Trol23, Illaman and myself) so yes, very excited!
Are you a surfer or a wakeboarder yourself? Or just a voyeur?
I actually took up surfing last year!
Where else can we expect to see you playing festival wise this summer? And what gigs have you done already that have excited you?
We will be at Secret Garden Party and lots of European dates – we loved places like SUMOL Summer Fest and our Netsky support tour was the lick!
You’ve been dubbed the Queen of bass music in the past. Do you feel like you’re an ambassador for the genre of music? Or do you think that the tag doesn’t give enough credit to your work beyond that sound?
It’s an honour to be called that and I take it very seriously. I think my work does stretch beyond being a singer but I thought the title emcompassed that, so I wear it with pride. I am very invovled in a lot of aspects in the scene and have been for many years, I’m hoping to branch out into management and A&R’ing in the near future so it’s all worthy experience.
There’s been controversy this year in the way female producers and DJs have presented themselves, particularly with Nina Kraviz and the infamous bathtub video. Do you think that there’s a different judging criteria applied to women compared to men from the media and audiences?
I honestly haven’t seen that so I couldn’t say but on the underground scene, your sexuality is secondary. If you are good at what you do, you get respect, that’s always been my experience.
Your album last year ‘The Real’ took a wide range of sounds and allowed you to stamp your personality a little more than simply working as the voice behind other people’s records. How important was that for you to be able to do?
Hugely important. It has been a dream of mine to compete an album for a long time and Will Simms and I locked ourselves away and made that happen. It’s a labour of love and highly rewarding.
Have you any plans for a follow-up any time soon?
I plan to release a few singles and collaborations for the time being, but who knows?
What other production plans have you got at present?
My single with Calvin Harris is out soon and I’m working with a bunch of talented people on beats at the moment too.
Are there any dream producers you’d love to work with?
Sly & Robbie, Chad Hugo, Goldie, Paul Epworth … The list changes according to my mood.
And finally, what else lies in the future for you?
This whole thing is a huge deal to me. I understand that music is nothing in the grand scheme of the world but I reckon it does help it along its way. Whether it is to make you feel better or worse, it has a really strong hold on people. If I can be involved in spreading the word and making sure good music reaches people, and the right musicians get noticed, it’s something I will never stop doing.

Ayah Marar’s The Real may not be out till tomorrow, but it’s not stopping the blogs from buzzing about it. Raw Tracks Music recently did a review about it, and they had a lot of good stuff to say. They speak about the “kaleidoscopic” tendencies the album has, which Raw Tracks Music says “ake inspiration from the underground dance scene, cherry-picking the very best elements of drum and bass, techno and house and bolting them onto well-crafted pop hooks that look set to shatter dance floors.” You can read the full review here or check it out below.
Well known amongst the electronic music community in the UK, Ayah’s dedication to her music has earned her the rightful title of “The Queen Of Bass.” Her debut album, ”The Real” has been attracting widespread attention and critical acclaim, with a recent Vibe Magazine interview, Music Week featuring her song “Alive” as Track Of The Week, and Ayah winning Best Female Artist in the 2013 Drum And Bass Awards. Ayah’s fan-base is strong and promises to continue growing with the US release of “The Real” due out on July 9th this year.
Dance music is a broad church, but within each parish there’s usually a set of rules. A doesn’t always go with B, and X shouldn’t really mix with Y, but sometimes those rules are meant to be broken or manipulated into odd new shapes. Ayah Marar’s kaleidoscopic debut album, “The Real,” is a case in point: thirteen songs that take inspiration from the underground dance scene, cherry-picking the very best elements of drum and bass, techno and house and bolting them onto well-crafted pop hooks that look set to shatter dance floors. “It’s an homage to dance music in whatever form, whether it’s garage or two step or house or drum and bass,” she explains.
With seemingly every other new pop star trying to marry a gargantuan dance beat to a pretty melody, it’s a competitive world. The difference here is that Ayah Marar isn’t faking it. She lives the life of an underground dance fiend, of a DJ and MC, of a strong woman in a male-dominated industry. Her two worlds, the underground and the mainstream, have been brought together organically, co-existing in a way that sounds fresh rather than forced. “I’m trying something that I don’t think has been done in the way we’re trying to do it,” Marar states. “It’s what I love to do; it’s trying to find that balance.”
Last week, Ayah Marar reportingly killed it at the Innovation In The Sun festival in Barcelona. Drum and Bass authority, All Things Drum and Bass says that Ayah put a “fresh twist on a live set” and recalls it ended way too soon. The crowd photo, courtesy of Ayah’s instagram, is more than enough proof she had the crowd on their feet. All Things Drum And Bass apparently recorded the set and it’s meant to be online in the coming days. Check back for that soon!
MTV Iggy, a new section of MTV covered up and coming international acts, posted the new video for Ayah Marar’s latest single “Lethal Dose.” Widely thought of as showing a bit of Ayah’s softer side, the video clip “Lethal Dose” features a more personal look at Ayah. MTV Iggy regards Ayah Marar for her “poignant songwriting, singing and aggressive DJ style.” Check out the clip below, and read the write up for the video here.
