It's back and it's better than ever!
The Best of Radikal Techno marks the return of the Radikal Techno series of compilations. Originally released in the early 1990's when the techno craze was just beginning in the United States, Radikal Techno featured the best that techno had to offer.
One of the all time best-selling series of techno compilations, the original three volumes of Radikal Techno were a major force in bringing progressive European electronic "techno" music to the mainstream American public. Based on drum machine loops, synthesizers, sampled vocals, and advanced bpms, techno abandoned all that was standard and formulaic in music at that time. It was raw, energetic and new!!
Eventually, it was also seen as dangerous. After several years of continuously increasing in popularity, Time magazine ran a cover story about three kids that died of the drug Ecstasy at a California rave. Of course, techno was the music associated with the rave culture. The media picked up on the coverage of perceived rave related dangers, and the domino effect began. Radio stations that were supporting this new genre of music backed off, raves stopped happening, and techno music died a fast death.
It took awhile to recover, but "techno" has been making a steady comeback ever since. We all know that it never really disappeared, but was just driven underground. Whether you now call it techno, rave, trance, or electronica, it all began as techno. Technically, it still is.
