JOCELYN BROWN
Jocelyn Brown comes from a musical family. Her aunt, Barbara Roy,
sung in the female group Ecstasy, Passion and Pain. Her grandmother,
mother, two aunts, and a cousin all sang. Jocelyn spent her
preschool years with her grandmother in Kinston, NC. Her aunt's
success with EPP provided the inspiration for Jocelyn to spread her
musical wings. Beginning in church and singing with various gospel
choirs out of Brooklyn, Jocelyn built up a solid following, becoming
a favored soloist at her uncle's church in Washington, DC.
Gradually, Jocelyn left gospel for secular music - disco in
particular - singing with local bands like Machine and Kleer. She
was a member of Monty Rock's pseudo soul group Disco Tex and the
Sex-O-Lettes, who scored with Get Dancing, and Musique who waxed
Keep On Jumpin', and the risque Push Push In The Bush. Jocelyn was
traveling all over the world doing what she loved best - singing. At
home she worked with producer Greg Diamond on different projects,
including the group Change, which featured a male vocalist by the
name of Luther Vandross. She kept busy touring with Change and doing
studio and live background vocals for a laundry list of artists,
including John Lennon, Roberta Flack, Janis Joplin, Dan Hartman,
Bette Midler, George Benson and Boy George. When the members of
Change disbanded, Jocelyn started recording with other groups like
Inner Life on Salsoul Records where she soloed on a superlative
disco version of Ain't No Mountain High Enough and established
herself on the dance club circuit. All the while she kept her bank
account afloat by doing session work throughout the late 1970's and
early 1980's. Around 1982 she worked in the movie Divine Madness,
starring Bette Midler. Returning east, she waxed Caught Up In A One
Night Love Affair, a very popular number in New York's disco clubs
like Studio 54, Paradise Garage, The Fever, Harlem World and Bond's
International.
In the fall of 1983, Jocelyn teamed with her sister Annette and
wrote Somebody Else's Guy, her most popular recording to date. It
reached the number two position of Billboard's Black singles chart
and number 13 in the UK. Jocelyn was truly a disco diva. She has
appeared on Manu Dibango's Soul Makossa LP, cut Ego Maniac and
Whatever Satisfies You. Completed a duet with Kym Mazelle in No More
Tears (Enough is Enough) and Love Me The Right Way, recorded Riding
on The Wings with Motiv 8 and appeared in concert with Roy Ayres and
Ray Gaskins overseas. Jocelyn currently resides in London where she
continues to write songs and be a diva in demand.
JAMESTOWN
Since Kent Brainerd first moved to London in 1983, the Chicago-born
entrepreneur, musician, composer and producer has worked in nearly
all areas of the music industry.
As an entrepreneur, Kent owns and operates Jamestown, which began as
one recording studio in 1988, and has now grown into a 22 unit
complex located near the City Of London. Jamestown's setting and
ambience (designed by Kent to resemble a 1930's luxury cruise-liner)
have attracted a vibrant musical community and spawned many
collaborations. In addition to 17 music studios, Jamestown now
features an excellent restaurant, two record companies, a management
company, an international music licensing company and a beautiful
conservatory. The studios are booked long term by a variety of
successful producers, DJs, singers and production companies and
Jamestown is able to boast an occupancy rate of 100%. Indeed, with
an ever-expanding waiting list, Kent is planning to build a further
10 studios during 1998.
As a composer and producer, Kent has a varied working life, creating
music for TV, cinema and radio advertising, contemporary recording
artists and award-winning corporate soundtracks. Kent's compositions
are featured in current ads for Nintendo, Bacardi Spice and
Cadbury's Creme Eggs.
In addition to his commercial work, Kent continues to work as a
dance music producer / remixer / engineer with artists such as Mick
Jagger, Donna Summer, Gabrielle, Brand New Heavies, The Shamen,
D-Influence, MC Hammer, Maxi Priest, Tone Loc, D-Ream, The Happy
Mondays, Kenny G., Adeva, Paul Oakenfold, Massive and many others.
As a recording artist, Kent has enjoyed international chart success
as founder of Drum Theatre, signed to CBS in 1986, and Jamestown
with Jocelyn Brown.
Kent's first collaboration with Jocelyn was in 1991 with the hugely
successful She's Got Soul which flew up the dance and national
charts.
I Believe, which has already proved a massive hit in the UK and
across Europe, features the legendary diva Jocelyn Brown and the
multi-talented Kent Brainerd (aka Jamestown). Combine that with the
ultra-smooth remixing skills of world-renown super DJ Benji
Candelario, and it just can't miss!
